NYC Limited Hoisting Machine Operator (HMO) License Extension

Important Update: NYC Limited Hoisting Machine Operator (HMO) License Extension

By: Able Safety Consulting

The NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) has recently issued an important extension for individuals applying for the Limited Hoisting Machine Operator (HMO) License, covering articulating boom cranes, mini cranes, and telehandlers. This update provides a significant opportunity for those who have been affected by the high demand for training and certification courses. If you are seeking to obtain your HMO License, here’s everything you need to know about the extension and how to take advantage of it.

Key Deadlines You Need to Know

  1. Application Submission Deadline:
November 6, 2024 – This is the last day to submit your application for the Limited HMO License via the DOB NOW: Licensing system.

  2. Training and Certification Deadline:
May 6, 2025 – If you submit your application by November 6, 2024, you will have until this date to complete the required 8-hour training course and obtain the national certification (NCCCO).

Why Was the Extension Granted?

Due to the overwhelming demand for the mandatory 8-hour HMO training course and the required national certification, many individuals were unable to secure a spot in the necessary training courses before the November deadline. The Department recognized this challenge and has provided this extension to ensure that applicants have more time to meet the licensure requirements without being penalized.

Alternate Pathway: How Does It Work?

For those who cannot complete the 8-hour HMO course and certification by the November 6, 2024 deadline, the DOB has established an alternate pathway. Here’s how it works:

  1. Submit Your Application by November 6, 2024:
You must submit your HMO License application via the DOB NOW: Licensing system before the deadline. In lieu of the course completion certificate and national certification card, you will need to upload the Limited Hoisting Machine Operator License Articulating Boom Crane, Mini Crane, Telehandler – Training & Certification Affidavit.

  2. Complete the Training and Certification by May 6, 2025:
You will need to finish the 8-hour training and obtain the required national certification by this extended deadline. Once completed, you must submit your course certificate and certification card through the DOB NOW: Licensing system.

  3. Certify Other Requirements by November 6, 2024:
All other qualifications for licensure must be met by the initial November deadline. This includes any experience, age, or other applicable requirements specific to the HMO license.

What Happens if You Miss the May 6, 2025 Deadline?

If you fail to complete the training and certification by May 6, 2025, you will no longer be eligible under the alternate pathway. Your application will be denied, and you will be required to meet all full training and qualification requirements to reapply for licensure.

Benefits of Submitting Your Application Now

By applying under this extension, you’ll benefit from several key advantages:

  • Continue Working While Your Application Is Pending:
As long as you submit your application and the affidavit by the November 6 deadline, you will be allowed to continue operating the relevant equipment while your application is processed.

  • Avoid Delays in Certification:
With additional time to complete your training and certification, you can plan around any scheduling conflicts or course availability issues, without rushing or risking non-compliance.

How to Submit Your Application

To apply for the HMO License under this extension, follow these steps:

  1. Submit your application through the DOB NOW: Licensing system by November 6, 2024.
  2. Upload the Training & Certification Affidavit. You can find the affidavit form here.
  3. Complete the 8-hour HMO training course and obtain your national certification by May 6, 2025.
  4. Upload the required documentation through the DOB NOW: Licensing system before the May deadline.
